The 27th Awarding Ceremony and Nominees Gala were held in Moscow on the Main (Historic) Stage of Bolshoi Theatre on May 21. Prix Benois a major international dance prize for ballet professionals, named also “ballet Oscar”. This year the festival was complemented by the special gala-concert of ballet stars, Benois laureates of previous years, dedicated to the Year of Theatre.
The prize is awarded every spring to mark extraordinary achievements in the world of dance of the previous year, merging classical ballet with contemporary and modern productions. According to the rules of the competition the shortlist of nominees and the winners are selected by the jury panel, presided by the permanent chairman Yury Grigorovich, President of the International Dance Union and Choreographer of Bolshoi theatre of Russia.
This time he couldn’t attend the ceremony and participated remotely.
The jury panel which changes every year included:
Svetlana Zakharova, Bolshoi Theatre Prima ballerina, the Co-Chairman
Dirk Badenhorst, CEO of the South African International Ballet Competition, founder of the South African Mzansi Ballet and CuDanSA school
Ted Brandsen, Director of Dutch National Ballet
Ana Laguna, international star, ballet master and coach
Agnès Letestu, Paris Opera Ballet etoile (1997 – 2013), now guest star, costume designer
Vladimir Malakhov, international star, choreographer coach
Rachel Moore, President and CEO of the Los Angeles Music Center
The laureats were chosen among 5 scenographers, 7 female and 7 male dancers, 2 composers and 6 choreographers – together 27 nominees from 16 leading classical and contemporary companies from Russia, USA, France, Austria and other countries.
John Macfarlane was the first one to get his award in Scenography nomination for his designs of Swan Lake at the Royal Ballet (Great Britain). Vadim Muntagirov received the title of the Best Dancer for his contribution to the same production.
In two nominations the jury couldn’t pick just one winner. Ashley Bouder of New York City Ballet (Swanilda, Coppelia, L.Delibes/G.Balanchine) and Elisa Carrillo Cabrera of the State Ballet Berlin (Juliet, Romeo and Juliet, S.Prokofiev/N.Duato) shared the prize for the Best Female Dancer. And the titles for the Best Choreography were awarded to Christian Spuck, Artistic director Zurich Ballet (for Winterreise) and Fredrik Benke Rydman (for Duet with an Industrial Robot) of Stockholm City Theatre.
The winner in Composer’s nomination, represented by two candidates, has not been chosen.
The most prestigious Prize For Lifetime Achievement this year came to Jiří Kylián, an outstanding choreographer, a member of the French Academy of Fine Arts, twice Benois de la Danse-awarded laureate. Unfortunately, he couldn’t come to the ceremony but he thanked the jury and Yury Grigorovich personally for the award in his video-address. Another special Russian-Italian ballet prize, which unites the Benois de la Danse and the Premio Positano Leonide Massine Award went to Anna Laudere, the Prima-Ballerina of the Hamburg Ballet .
Later at the gala-concert which followed the award presentation the audience could see fragments from almost all nominated performances. Duet with the Industrial Robot, however, was performed without the robot, because the character weighs almost a ton and couldn’t be transported to Moscow.
The festival was concluded on May 22 with the Charity Gala Stars Of Benois De La Danse – To The Year Of Theatre. The programme included several world and Russian premieres, among which are Heroica, 2nd Movement from Beethoven-Project to the music by L.van Beethoven, choreographed by J.Neumeier and Nocturne to the music by F.Chopin, choreographed by Ch.Spuck – Benois-2019 nominee. Traditionally the money from the gala is contributed to the retired members of different Moscow ballet companies.
